Ahmedabad: Regional transport planning linked to the Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor is gathering momentum as Maharashtra moves ahead with a proposed metro corridor designed to improve connectivity with India’s first high-speed rail network. The initiative signals a broader shift towards integrating multiple modes of public transport, an approach expected to strengthen intercity mobility while supporting more sustainable urban development across the western region.
The proposed metro route between Thane and Diva has received preliminary approval from the Maharashtra government, with transport authorities now preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to assess its technical, financial and operational viability. Once completed, the corridor is expected to connect with the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail alignment, creating a seamless interchange between metro services and high-speed rail. For Ahmedabad, the development reinforces the importance of integrated transport systems rather than standalone infrastructure projects. As the northern terminal of the Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor, the city is expected to benefit from stronger regional connectivity as feeder transport networks are expanded across Gujarat and neighbouring Maharashtra. Urban planners increasingly argue that efficient first- and last-mile links are critical to ensuring high-speed rail delivers wider economic and social benefits. The proposed metro corridor is also expected to connect with existing and planned metro lines serving major urban centres across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Such integration could improve passenger movement between residential, commercial and industrial districts, reducing dependence on private vehicles and easing pressure on conventional suburban rail services that continue to experience high passenger volumes.
