India’s high-speed rail programme is moving into its next planning phase as authorities begin evaluating advanced train technologies for future bullet train corridors, even before the country’s inaugural high-speed railway becomes fully operational. The initiative signals a long-term strategy to expand fast rail connectivity while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities for next-generation transport systems.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has invited leading global rolling stock manufacturers to present technical capabilities for the proposed B35 high-speed train platform. The assessment will help determine which companies possess the engineering expertise and production capacity required for future high-speed rail corridors planned across the country. While the proposed trainsets are intended for upcoming corridors, they are also expected to become part of the long-term fleet operating on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor as the network evolves. Technical presentations from participating manufacturers are scheduled for mid-July, with the evaluation focusing on both performance standards and manufacturing readiness. The proposed trains are expected to support operations at design speeds of up to 350 kmph, requiring advanced propulsion systems, vehicle control technologies, mechanical engineering and integrated safety systems. Authorities are also placing considerable emphasis on reliability under Indian climatic conditions, recognising that infrastructure performance must remain consistent across diverse weather environments.
An important aspect of the Ahmedabad High Speed Rail programme is the growing focus on domestic production. Manufacturers are expected to demonstrate their ability to design, develop and manufacture critical train components within India, supporting national objectives of expanding indigenous industrial capacity while reducing long-term dependence on imported technologies. Transport economists believe the localisation of advanced rail manufacturing could create opportunities across engineering, precision manufacturing, electronics and supply chain industries. Such investments have the potential to generate skilled employment while contributing to India’s ambition of becoming a global manufacturing hub for high-value railway technologies.
The B35 assessment forms part of a broader national vision for high-speed connectivity. Planned corridors linking major economic centres—including routes connecting western, southern and northern India—are expected to strengthen regional mobility, reduce intercity travel times and improve economic integration between metropolitan regions. Meanwhile, construction continues on the 508-kilometre Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor, India’s first bullet train project. Authorities are targeting the Gujarat section between Surat and Vapi as the first operational segment, providing an initial demonstration of high-speed rail before wider network expansion. As planning progresses, the Ahmedabad High Speed Rail initiative illustrates how future transport infrastructure is increasingly being shaped by long-term technology planning, domestic manufacturing and resilient engineering. Successful execution could accelerate India’s transition towards faster, lower-emission intercity mobility while supporting sustainable urban and regional development.
