Joint Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad Crime Branch, Sharad Singhal, confirmed the extensive search, which ultimately yielded no suspicious findings, declaring the threat a hoax. On July 18, numerous schools across these major urban centres received identical email threats, prompting immediate evacuations and extensive searches. Despite these widespread alerts ultimately being declared hoaxes, the sheer scale of the disruption, impacting more than 45 schools and three colleges in Delhi alone over multiple days, highlights a worrying trend in urban destabilisation tactics.
The human and economic toll of these repeated hoaxes is substantial. Parents, like Parmita Sharma from Paschim Vihar, chose to keep their children home, prioritising safety over routine, even as the threats were debunked. Many others were forced to abandon their work mid-day, rushing to schools to retrieve their children. This creates an “emotional rollercoaster” for families, as described by a parent from Dwarka, fostering an environment of tension and uncertainty that undermines daily life and productivity. Such disruptions disproportionately affect working families, highlighting a subtle yet significant impact on urban equity and the smooth functioning of city economies.
