AAI Starts Rs 30 Crore Boundary Wall Project at Coimbatore

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated a significant project to construct a 16.67-kilometre pre-cast boundary wall at Coimbatore International Airport, marking a crucial step in the airport’s planned expansion. With a tender value of Rs 29.19 crore, the project aims to bolster security and facilitate the airport’s growth to accommodate increasing air traffic and evolving infrastructure needs.

The project, set to be completed in 15 months, will see the existing boundary wall, which currently stands at 2,990 metres long and 45 metres wide, extended and enhanced. Once finished, the new boundary wall will measure 3,810 metres in length while maintaining the same width, significantly improving the safety and security of the newly acquired land. Coimbatore International Airport has recently expanded its footprint, with the state government handing over an additional 627.89 acres of land to AAI, increasing the total area of the airport to over 1,048 acres. As part of this expansion, the airport will now feature a new operational boundary wall that will span 9,063 metres, alongside a non-operational boundary wall covering 7,600 metres. This development is a part of the broader master plan aimed at modernising and upgrading the airport’s infrastructure.

In line with the expansion, the airport is also set to receive a new integrated terminal building and additional flight parking slots, offering a total of 10 flight parking spaces, with the capacity to park up to 20 flights equipped with aerobridges. The airport’s modernisation is in response to the increasing demand for air travel in the region, offering a more streamlined and efficient experience for passengers and airlines alike. Experts have noted that this is just the first of many steps the AAI will take to develop the airport into a modern, international-standard facility. According to officials, the boundary wall project is an essential part of the airport’s growth strategy and will play a pivotal role in securing the vast land area acquired for future infrastructure development.

The boundary wall project has garnered positive feedback from various quarters. Local experts have expressed optimism about the ongoing developments at Coimbatore International Airport. They view this as a step forward in the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in Western Tamil Nadu, helping the region achieve its potential as an important transport hub in southern India. As AAI moves forward with the project, the focus will not only be on expanding capacity but also on ensuring that security measures meet the international standards expected of a rapidly growing airport. The new boundary wall is a symbol of the airport’s commitment to maintaining these high standards as it prepares to handle more passengers and more international flights in the future.

The Rs 30 crore boundary wall project at Coimbatore International Airport is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to upgrade the region’s aviation infrastructure. The expansion will not only improve the airport’s security but also create a foundation for further development, strengthening the region’s position as a key player in the aviation sector.
