Aadhaar services have remained unavailable for several months at Mayakonda, forcing residents from around 50 villages to travel to Anagodu or Davanagere for enrolment and updates, according to a report by Prajavani published on November 3.
Mayakonda is both a legislative Assembly constituency headquarters and a hobli centre. Residents visit the local facility for new Aadhaar enrolment, mobile-number changes and corrections to personal details, but have reportedly been returning without receiving the service.
The disruption has particularly affected people who must take time away from daily-wage work to access the nearest functioning centre. Anagodu is about 15 kilometres from Mayakonda, and residents there are issued tokens for Aadhaar-related work. Only people with tokens are served, and those who cannot complete the process in one day may have to return on another day, the report said.
Residents travelling to Davanagere face a longer journey and additional costs. The disruption also creates a larger burden for older people and others who may find it difficult to make repeated trips to distant service centres.
The Aadhaar enrolment work at Mayakonda stopped after the operator who had been working at the centre for several years was not granted a renewal. According to the report, operators must pass an examination every year for their authorisation to be renewed. The failure to renew the operator’s authorisation resulted in the complete suspension of enrolment-related work at the centre.
R. Ravi, deputy tahsildar of the Mayakonda Nadakacheri, said the operator, Prabhakar N., had not passed the Aadhaar examination, causing inconvenience to the public. A request has been submitted to the tahsildar to appoint another operator for Aadhaar enrolment work, Ravi said.
The Nadakacheri is a local administrative point where residents access government services. The absence of an Aadhaar facility there means that residents from several villages must depend on centres outside Mayakonda for services linked to enrolment and demographic updates.
Jayaprakash B.K., president of the Kannada Yuva Shakti Kendra, said Aadhaar enrolment was an essential public facility and urged the authorities to reopen the centre quickly. Residents have also called for the necessary arrangements to be made at the Nadakacheri so that Aadhaar services can resume locally.
The immediate administrative step identified in the report is the appointment of another authorised operator. The local demand is for the Aadhaar enrolment centre at Mayakonda Nadakacheri to be restarted at the earliest.
