Chennai Madhavaram Lake Becomes City’s First Waterbody To Offer Jet Ski Rides
Madhavaram Lake in North Chennai has emerged as the city’s first rejuvenated waterbody to provide jet ski rides, while also offering boating facilities, positioning it as a key recreational hotspot. Developed and restored by the Greater Chennai Corporation, the lake’s revival is part of a broader effort to enhance eco-friendly leisure spaces in the region.
The restoration, completed at an estimated cost of ₹11.56 crore across two phases, included desilting, bund formation, construction of toe walls, footpaths, electrical installations, and tree plantations. Of the 66-acre lake, 30 acres have been prepared specifically for boating and jet ski activities. Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) will manage the water rides, ensuring organized ticketing and safety measures.Regional Deputy Commissioner (North), Katta Ravi Teja, stated, “The jet ski and boating facilities are expected to open during the Pongal holidays, attracting local residents and tourists alike. This initiative makes Madhavaram Lake the first in Chennai to provide such modern water recreation experiences.”
As part of the eco-restoration, untreated sewage has been blocked from entering the lake via newly installed sluice gates, ensuring cleaner water. Excess rainwater during monsoon seasons will flow through stormwater drains to Puzhal Lake via Manali Lake, maintaining optimal water levels.Residents have welcomed the project, emphasizing the importance of proper maintenance to sustain the lake as a leisure destination. S Vetrirajan, a local resident, noted, “This restoration is a significant improvement for North Chennai, and with proper upkeep, Madhavaram Lake will serve as a major recreational hub for the city.”
The lake’s revival and introduction of modern water rides not only enhance tourism prospects but also contribute to Chennai’s urban sustainability initiatives, promoting eco-friendly infrastructure and safe leisure activities.
