Mumbai’s Mulund railway station is set for a major upgrade as the long-awaited “jodi” bridges are expected to open by March 2026, significantly easing commuter movement across the station. The project involves the construction of an elevated deck, multiple foot overbridges (FOBs), and an upgraded entrance plaza, marking a milestone in the station’s modernisation and alignment with sustainable urban transport objectives.
The redevelopment plan includes 14 staircases, seven escalators, and two elevators, enhancing vertical and horizontal circulation for thousands of daily passengers. A key component is the CSMT-end jodi connector bridge, which will link the upcoming east-west BMC bridge to a new, wider FOB, creating a seamless passage for commuters and reducing congestion on platforms during peak hours. “Platform 1 alone will feature a three-metre-wide staircase and a 10.5-metre-wide deck, while platforms 2 to 4 are being integrated with the public FOBs to improve flow,” a senior official explained. On the Kalyan end, a six-metre-wide, 43-metre-long north FOB is under construction, designed to balance commuter traffic between the CSMT and Kalyan sides. Foundations and columns are progressing steadily, with UP escalators planned on the CSMT side and wide staircases on the Kalyan side, optimising movement throughout the day.
The project’s largest component is a 165-metre-long elevated deck parallel to Platform 1, 16.5 metres wide, providing multiple vertical exits to alleviate bottlenecks. Construction work is being executed in phases, with visible progress at both the CSMT end and mid-station. Once operational, this deck will act as a linear concourse, integrating access to escalators, staircases, and elevators while maintaining safety and accessibility standards. The existing 4.5-metre-wide FOB will be replaced with a new 8-metre-wide, 56-metre-long structure, with dismantling planned only after the commissioning of the new CSMT-end bridge. Complementary works include a west-side entrance plaza, relocation of railway offices to free up commuter space, and improvements to circulation areas on the station’s west side.
Industry experts note that such upgrades are essential to address peak-hour congestion, minimise unsafe crowding, and promote inclusive commuting experiences. By incorporating escalators, elevators, and wider decks, the project aligns with sustainable urban mobility goals and enhances passenger convenience while reducing pressure on existing infrastructure. Once completed, the Mulund station overhaul will set a benchmark for modern, inclusive, and efficient suburban railway infrastructure in Mumbai, demonstrating how thoughtful design can transform commuter experiences in dense urban environments.
