Steady rainfall across Chennai’s western catchments has pushed Chembarambakkam Lake to 22 feet, prompting water authorities to begin controlled releases on Wednesday to protect communities living downstream. The reservoir, one of the city’s most important drinking water sources, continues to receive significant inflows, raising both hopes for long-term supply security and concerns over short-term flood risk.
Officials confirmed that around 200 cusecs of surplus water is now being released as a precaution, emphasising that the discharge is modest and calibrated to maintain the lake’s structural safety. The reservoir currently holds a little over 3,100 million cubic feet of water — nearing its full capacity — and inflow from the catchment has climbed to more than 1,300 cusecs. A senior water management official said the decision to initiate early release stemmed from lessons learnt after recent extreme weather events. “We are prioritising safety while ensuring that urban water security is not compromised. Continuous monitoring allows us to make timely adjustments,” the official noted.
The rise in storage comes at a crucial moment for Chennai, a rapidly growing metropolis that has repeatedly faced both water scarcity and intense flood cycles.
