Mumbai Kolkata SpiceJet Flight Lands Safely After Mid Air Engine Failure Report

A SpiceJet aircraft operating from Mumbai to Kolkata made an emergency landing on Sunday night following a technical issue reported in one of its engines. The incident, which occurred during descent at the Kolkata airport, prompted a full emergency alert that was later withdrawn after the flight landed safely.

According to airport officials, flight SG670 from Mumbai to Kolkata reported an engine-related malfunction shortly before landing. The aircraft, carrying passengers and crew, touched down safely at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport around 11:38 pm, after which all on board were deplaned without incident. The airline later confirmed that the flight had encountered a “technical issue” rather than a critical engine failure. “On November 9, SpiceJet flight SG670 operating from Mumbai to Kolkata experienced a technical issue during descent. The aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew deplaned normally,” said a company spokesperson.

Aviation authorities said standard emergency protocols were activated immediately upon receiving the pilot’s report. “Full emergency procedures were initiated as a precautionary measure,” an airport official stated. “However, once the aircraft landed safely, the emergency status was withdrawn.” This marks the third such technical-related diversion or emergency incident involving the airline in recent months. In October, a SpiceJet flight from Madurai to Dubai was diverted to Chennai following a technical issue, though it was not classified as an emergency. Similarly, in September, a flight from Kandla to Mumbai made an emergency landing after an outer wheel was found detached on the runway post-take-off.

Aviation analysts note that while such incidents are not uncommon in the industry, repeated technical events underline the importance of consistent fleet maintenance and safety oversight. “India’s aviation sector is expanding rapidly, but maintenance quality and procedural transparency must keep pace,” said an aviation expert. SpiceJet, which has been working to stabilise its operations amid financial challenges and regulatory scrutiny, recently appointed a new Executive Director to strengthen strategic initiatives and operational reliability. The airline has indicated that it is focusing on improving safety, punctuality, and efficiency as part of its long-term transformation plan.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to review the latest incident as part of standard post-event safety checks. All aircraft systems and maintenance records will be examined before the aircraft returns to service. For passengers, the safe landing once again underscored the effectiveness of emergency protocols in Indian civil aviation — a sector balancing strong passenger growth with ongoing demands for higher safety standards and fleet modernisation.
