Chennai Introduces Water ATMs In Schools To Ensure Student Hydration

Chennai is taking a significant step towards improving student health and sustainable water access with the introduction of water ATMs in its Corporation-run schools. As part of phase one, three machines have been installed at Chennai Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Pulla Avenue, Shenoy Nagar, as well as schools in Perambur Market Street and Saidapet, ensuring a continuous supply of safe drinking water for students.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has allocated Rs. 1.60 crore to install 16 water dispensers across the city in the first phase. These units will serve higher secondary, middle, and primary schools in key areas including Kolathur, Tiruvanmiyur, Velachery, Taramani, Maduvinkarai, New Washermanpet, KK Nagar, West Saidapet, Buddha Street, Semmenchery, and MGR Nagar. The initiative aims to supplement the existing 250 litres per day of purified water already provided by the GCC at schools.

Officials highlighted the increasing demand for safe drinking water amid rising temperatures and shifting weather patterns. “Students, especially girls, face higher risks of dehydration. Providing five-minute hydration breaks and reliable water access ensures health and learning efficiency,” said a senior civic official. The project is being implemented in collaboration with education and works departments, ensuring proper oversight and maintenance.Plans for phase two are already underway, with 35 more schools expected to receive water ATMs at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.50 crore. Experts emphasised that access to clean drinking water in educational institutions not only promotes wellness but also encourages sustainable behaviour among children.

Water ATMs are designed for high-volume usage, equipped with purification systems that meet municipal and health standards. Officials also noted that regular monitoring and maintenance will ensure consistent water quality, reducing dependency on plastic bottles and contributing to Chennai’s broader sustainability objectives. The installation of water ATMs also aligns with Chennai’s focus on gender equity and public health. By providing easily accessible drinking water across schools, the initiative addresses the physiological needs of students during long academic hours, mitigating health risks associated with dehydration, especially for adolescent girls.

Civic and education department officials conducted inspections of the newly installed units, with plans to expand the programme citywide. The initiative reflects the Corporation’s commitment to combining infrastructure development with sustainable and equitable public services. With both phases completed, Chennai’s students will have uninterrupted access to purified drinking water, fostering healthier habits and reducing water-related stress. The GCC hopes the project will serve as a model for other urban centres seeking to integrate sustainable water solutions within public schools.
