Delhi NHAI Finalises Highway Parking Rates With Dedicated EV Slots

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has finalised rates for its inaugural parking facilities along the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway, aiming to streamline urban mobility and encourage electric vehicle adoption. Strategically located under and alongside flyovers and elevated stretches of the highway, these lots are part of NHAI’s broader effort to introduce organised, sustainable parking solutions in India’s capital.

Officials confirmed that the parking fees will be levied for a minimum of two hours, with incremental hourly charges applied thereafter. Unlike municipal parking, there is no daily pass system, making extended stays comparatively expensive. However, monthly passes will be available, mirroring the system used by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), allowing daytime parking while restricting overnight use. Vehicles parked beyond seven days will be turned over to local law enforcement.

NHAI has earmarked three locations for these facilities, collectively accommodating up to 1,000 vehicles. These include spaces under and adjacent to the flyover near Gandhi Nagar Market, Geeta Colony, and under the elevated section close to the East District Magistrate’s office. Development responsibilities have been delegated to the authority’s subsidiary, National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), which will oversee construction and operations under the Design, Build, Operate, and Transfer (DBOT) model. Private agencies have been invited to submit proposals, with selections expected next month.

To promote contactless payments and operational efficiency, all parking transactions will be processed via FASTag. Automatic entry and exit gates, coupled with real-time display boards indicating space availability, will enhance convenience for motorists. Importantly, 10 per cent of the parking slots 100 spaces will be reserved for electric vehicles, signalling NHAI’s commitment to supporting green mobility.Certain vehicle categories, including overcrowded tempos, auto-rickshaws, taxis, and trucks, will be prohibited from using the facility. Additionally, parking lanes cannot be allocated to vehicle showroom owners, ensuring fair access for the general public.

Parking rates have been standardised across vehicle types. Two-wheelers will incur ₹20 for up to two hours and ₹5 per additional hour, with monthly passes set at ₹1,000. Cars will be charged ₹40 for two hours and ₹10 hourly thereafter, with monthly passes costing ₹2,000. Three-wheelers and commercial four-wheelers will have their own rate structures, excluding monthly passes.Experts indicate that these organised parking initiatives could reduce congestion, improve urban traffic flow, and foster environmentally friendly commuting practices, particularly through the allocation of EV slots. The project represents a significant step towards integrating sustainable transport infrastructure within Delhi’s urban framework.
