Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited bids for the development of an Exotic Bird Park at Nahur. The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) tender, with a tentative project cost of Rs 166 crore, aims to create a facility that combines conservation, education, and visitor engagement while adhering to environmentally responsible practices.
The proposed Bird Park is designed to accommodate a diverse range of species, including macaws, parrots, toucans, swans, pelicans, ostriches, peafowls, and pheasants. According to BMC officials, enclosures will be constructed using stainless steel tensile wire rope mesh systems, creating naturalistic habitats that prioritise animal welfare and visitor safety. The landscape will feature artificial rock formations, water bodies, aviary shelters, and paddock areas to simulate native ecosystems. Supporting infrastructure will include veterinary hospitals, quarantine zones, and interpretation centres, making the facility a hub for scientific research and wildlife education. Visitors can expect immersive experiences through bird shows, audio-visual awareness systems, and underground parking facilities. Eco-friendly utilities, such as solar power integration and energy-efficient lighting, form a key part of the design, underscoring the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
Mechanical and electrical systems will be comprehensive, including substations, backup diesel generators, UPS systems, HVAC setups, CCTV surveillance, and biometric access control. Sensitive exhibits, such as waterfalls and aquariums, will operate under Life Support Systems (LSS) to maintain optimal environmental conditions. Rainwater harvesting, efficient ventilation, and renewable energy utilisation further reinforce the park’s green credentials. Landscaping plans include strategic plantation of trees, shrubs, and creepers, alongside bird enrichment devices tailored to species-specific behaviours. City officials emphasise that this facility will not only enhance the eastern suburbs’ recreational landscape but also position Mumbai as a leader in urban conservation. The park is expected to serve residents of Mulund, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, providing a much-needed nature-centric attraction in the densely populated eastern corridor.
Experts involved in urban planning highlight that integrating conservation with sustainable infrastructure is crucial for creating equitable and eco-friendly urban spaces. “By combining research, education, and public engagement, this project exemplifies how metropolitan authorities can design spaces that are both socially inclusive and environmentally responsible,” said a senior municipal consultant. This initiative marks Mumbai’s first dedicated bird park since colonial-era developments in Byculla, which historically combined botanical gardens with zoological exhibits. With plans to collaborate with internationally renowned aviaries, the BMC intends to create a benchmark facility that blends global best practices with local ecological needs.
The Nahur Bird Park project reflects a strategic push to integrate green infrastructure into Mumbai’s urban fabric, creating a sustainable model for future recreational and educational facilities.
