Kolkata Plans Bus Route Rationalisation After Metro Expansion Hits Ridership

Kolkata’s rapidly expanding Metro network is reshaping urban mobility, prompting the state to consider rationalising bus routes that overlap with the new mass rapid transit corridors. Following the launch of the 16.6-kilometre East-West Metro stretch linking Howrah Maidan to Sector V, several traditional bus routes have recorded a significant decline in ridership, raising concerns for operators and policymakers alike.

Officials said that the government is reviewing bus routes that run parallel to the Metro in order to optimise fleet utilisation and reduce redundancy. This could involve redeploying buses from routes such as Howrah–Sector V, New Garia–Beleghata, and Howrah–Ultadanga to areas underserved by the Metro, ensuring that connectivity gaps are addressed without wasteful duplication.Transport experts argue that rationalisation is not simply a financial decision but an opportunity to build a sustainable and integrated public transport ecosystem. A senior transport planner explained that “metro rail should ideally be supported by feeder services such as buses and autos, which bring passengers from residential clusters to the nearest stations. The objective must be to create a seamless, eco-friendly journey from door to destination.”

Bus operators have reported ridership losses of 20 to 30 per cent in the first week of Metro operations. However, industry representatives believe this is a temporary shift driven by curiosity around the new system. Nevertheless, many have warned that without adequate government intervention, the viability of private buses may weaken, risking job losses and further congestion if commuters return to personal vehicles.Officials confirmed that feeder services are under consideration to complement Metro routes. This could reduce the city’s carbon footprint by discouraging car use while ensuring equitable access to fast transport across socio-economic groups. Such integration, they said, will be key to ensuring the Metro’s long-term success. At the same time, the government has announced special bus services for the upcoming Durga Puja season, a period that sees Kolkata’s streets overflow with visitors and festival-goers.

In addition to regular services, 25 new buses are being deployed across key hubs including Howrah, Sealdah, and Esplanade, with further increases expected if required. Air-conditioned Volvo services will be dedicated to award-winning pandals and traditional Bonedi Barir celebrations, while late-night buses are being introduced to provide safe and affordable mobility during festive nights. The shift in commuter behaviour reflects a broader trend of urban India embracing mass rapid transit as a cleaner, more efficient alternative to conventional road transport. For Kolkata, the challenge now lies in harmonising the Metro’s expansion with its historic bus network, ensuring a balance between modernisation, sustainability, and inclusivity.
