Kolkata’s urban transport network has reached a significant milestone with the launch of new metro services across three key corridors. Metro authorities will now operate 366 trains daily, improving connectivity, reducing congestion, and supporting sustainable urban mobility. Experts note that these expansions are critical for a city of Kolkata’s scale, integrating eco-friendly transport options with economic growth and regional accessibility.
The newly inaugurated stretches include Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar on the Yellow Line, Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector V on the Green Line, and Kavi Subhash to Beleghata on the Orange Line. Officials indicated that the expansion is part of a broader strategy to strengthen public transit, offering commuters a reliable and low-carbon alternative to private vehicles. On the Green Line, 186 daily services will operate from Monday to Saturday, with trains departing every eight minutes. Services start at 6:30 am from Howrah Maidan and 6:32 am from Salt Lake Sector V, concluding at 9:45 pm and 9:47 pm respectively. Sundays will feature 104 services at 15-minute intervals, running from 9:00 am to 9:45 pm.
The Orange Line will have 60 trains daily from Monday to Friday, with 30 services in each direction at intervals of 25 minutes. First trains depart from Kavi Subhash and Beleghata at 8:00 am, while the last trains leave at 8:05 pm. There will be no weekend services on this line. The Yellow Line stretch from Noapara to Jai Hind Bimanbandar will operate 120 trains daily during weekdays, with 60 trains from each end. Trains run at intervals of 10–15 minutes, starting at 7:58 am and concluding at 8:00 pm. No services will operate on Saturdays and Sundays.
Transport experts highlight that these extensions will not only save time for daily commuters but also improve overall urban efficiency. Officials stressed that enhanced metro connectivity between residential, commercial, and economic hubs is essential for equitable and sustainable urban growth. By reducing reliance on private vehicles, these expansions are expected to contribute to cleaner air and lower carbon emissions across the city. Urban planners also emphasised that the metro expansion aligns with global standards for eco-friendly and accessible public transport. Integrating multiple corridors ensures seamless travel, encourages modal shifts, and enhances inclusivity by providing safe, gender-neutral commuting options.
With these new services operational, Kolkata Metro is poised to support both daily commuters and the city’s broader developmental goals. Authorities believe that the increase in train frequency and connectivity will catalyse economic activity, particularly in previously under-served regions, while promoting sustainable urban lifestyles.
