Mumbai Faces Heavy Rainfall As IMD Issues Orange Alert Today

Mumbai woke up to another day under relentless monsoon showers as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for today and tomorrow. Coastal and low-lying areas of the city, including Andheri, Ghatkopar, and parts of Navi Mumbai and South Mumbai, have experienced persistent heavy rainfall, creating challenges for daily commuters and urban infrastructure.

City authorities have also issued a high tide warning today, with peak tide expected at 07:55 hours at 3.54 metres and a low tide at 13:51 hours reaching 2.43 metres. Officials are closely monitoring the situation, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall periods and advising caution in flood-prone zones. Meteorological data from 8:30 am on August 17 to 5:30 am on August 18 indicates that coastal Maharashtra has recorded substantial rainfall, with Ratnagiri receiving 109 mm, Santacruz 71 mm, and Panjim 69 mm in neighbouring Goa. These figures underscore the intensity of the monsoon this season, which is shaping up to be wetter than usual. Experts emphasise that urban planning and resilient infrastructure are crucial to managing the impact of such extreme weather events on densely populated cities like Mumbai.

The heavy downpour has resulted in waterlogging across key arterial roads, affecting public transportation and daily operations. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials are coordinating with civic agencies to ensure drainage systems are functioning efficiently, while also issuing safety advisories to citizens in vulnerable areas. Authorities highlight the importance of eco-friendly urban solutions such as sustainable drainage systems and rainwater harvesting to mitigate flooding in future monsoon cycles. Experts note that climate change and rising sea levels are intensifying Mumbai’s monsoon rainfall patterns. The city’s resilience now depends on integrating gender-neutral and equitable urban policies, prioritising vulnerable populations in flood-prone zones, and promoting awareness campaigns that encourage responsible civic behaviour during heavy rains.

Despite the disruption, officials remain vigilant, monitoring rainfall forecasts and tide levels in real time. The orange alert from IMD signals very heavy rainfall in certain areas, which could result in localised flooding if precautions are not taken. Citizens are advised to stay indoors where possible and follow official guidance to minimise risk. As Mumbai navigates another day of intense monsoon activity, the city’s preparedness and adaptive urban planning will be critical in reducing both environmental impact and social disruption.
