Pune Pushes For Safer Roads And Urban Mobility

Pune is set for a major leap in policing capacity and transport efficiency as the state government approves an ambitious plan to meet the demands of its fast-growing population. The measures include a significant expansion of police infrastructure, advanced traffic management systems and a new urban mobility strategy to strengthen safety and streamline movement across the city.

During a recent review visit, the state’s senior leadership inaugurated a new police station and laid the foundation for four more, while giving clearance for seven additional facilities. In total, 12 new police stations have now been approved for Pune, accompanied by the induction of 1,800 personnel and the creation of two new Deputy Commissioner of Police positions. Officials say these measures will enable quicker response times, improve crime prevention and strengthen public trust in law enforcement. The boost in manpower is designed to match the city’s surging population and rising urban challenges. Experts highlight that expanding police presence in rapidly developing suburbs and high-density zones is vital to addressing crime prevention, traffic discipline and community outreach. Urban safety analysts say the move aligns with global best practices where rapid urbanisation is balanced with proportional investment in public safety.

In parallel, Pune’s traffic congestion consistently ranked among the city’s top public concerns is set to be addressed with the rollout of an Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) at 503 junctions. This AI-powered system will monitor and manage real-time vehicle flows, simulate traffic patterns and enable instant diversions during peak hours or emergencies. Transport planners expect the system to cut travel delays, reduce fuel wastage and help lower vehicular emissions, aligning with the city’s climate-resilience targets.Looking beyond immediate transport relief, the government is finalising an Urban Mobility Plan for Pune and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority area. The blueprint will integrate public transport systems, encourage non-motorised travel, and prioritise low-carbon mobility solutions. Officials confirmed that the plan is being developed in collaboration with national policy think tanks to ensure alignment with long-term sustainable growth goals.

Economic development is also on the agenda, with the city’s growth strategy being designed in partnership with national agencies to position Pune as a leading hub for technology, manufacturing and green innovation. Simultaneously, law enforcement is stepping up its crackdown on illicit activities, with recent operations targeting drug abuse and ensuring that all seized substances are destroyed under strict supervision. The combination of policing, traffic management and mobility initiatives is being seen by urban governance experts as a holistic step toward creating a safer, more sustainable and future-ready Pune. Whether these measures deliver on their promise will depend on efficient implementation, steady funding and community engagement in the months ahead.
