The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is actively pursuing the expansion of its Blue Line into Ghaziabad, seeking in-principle approval from the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR). This crucial step signifies a renewed impetus to enhance inter-city connectivity within the National Capital Region (NCR), promising to alleviate traffic congestion and foster a more sustainable, eco-friendly, and equitably accessible urban transport network for millions of commuters.
The long-anticipated metro line extension is poised to significantly improve connectivity between Noida and Ghaziabad. A key component of this Phase 5 expansion is a 5.1-kilometre elevated corridor with five stations, linking Noida Electronic City to Sahibabad. This particular stretch has been a subject of discussion since 2020, with the GDA finally deciding to advance this specific route in 2023, recognising its critical role in streamlining commuter flow and supporting regional economic integration.
Beyond the Blue Line, DMRC’s Phase 5 plans encompass broader extensions across the network. These include a 3-kilometre route on the Red Line from New Bus Adda to Ghaziabad railway station, featuring one new station. Additionally, a 4-kilometre elevated extension on the Blue Line from Mohan Nagar to Vaishali will add four stations, while a substantial 12-kilometre extension from Gokulpuri (an interchange on the Pink Line) to Arthala Metro station on the Red Line is also planned. This 12-kilometre segment will include eight stations, with approximately 6.5 kilometres falling within Ghaziabad’s jurisdiction, ensuring comprehensive coverage.
A significant development in accelerating these projects is the central government’s commitment to fully fund the DPR preparation costs. This addresses a critical hurdle that had previously stalled progress, as the Uttar Pradesh state government had declined GDA’s funding requests in early 2023. The central government’s financial backing underscores a strategic commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure, which is vital for managing rapid urbanisation and promoting sustainable development across the sprawling NCR.
The expansion of the Delhi Metro network into Ghaziabad is a cornerstone for creating a zero-net-carbon urban agglomeration. By providing efficient and high-capacity public transport alternatives, the metro will significantly reduce reliance on private vehicles, leading to lower greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, and reduced traffic congestion. This enhanced connectivity also promotes equitable access to employment, education, and healthcare opportunities for all residents, fostering a more inclusive and gender-neutral urban environment, thereby solidifying the NCR’s position as a model for sustainable metropolitan growth.
