Chennai Porur Lake Undergoes Rs9.12 Crore Transformation into Vibrant Urban Space
Chennai’s significant Porur Lake is poised for a remarkable transformation, as the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has initiated a ₹9.12 crore project to revitalize its lakefront. This ambitious endeavor aims to convert the lake’s perimeter and surrounding areas into a sustainable, ecologically balanced, and dynamic urban space, enhancing its crucial roles as both a drinking water source and a contributor to urban biodiversity and resilience.
The comprehensive development plan for Porur Lake integrates environmental conservation with modern urban infrastructure and community engagement. Key components include the creation of new walkways, dedicated cycle tracks, open-air gyms, and engaging play areas for children. The project also envisions new seating zones, kiosks, gazebos, and a public plaza, complete with ample parking facilities for vehicles and two-wheelers. These thoughtfully designed amenities are intended to establish an inclusive and inviting recreational waterfront for all residents.
Currently, the Metro Water Board relies on Porur Lake to supply drinking water to areas such as KK Nagar. This lakefront development is one of ten similar projects championed by the CMDA across Chennai, underscoring a broader strategic vision for rejuvenating the city’s vital waterbodies. This commitment to green and blue infrastructure was also evident in March, when Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated a “sponge park” in Porur, near Sri Ramachandra University.
