Mumbai Coastal Roads Twin Underground Parking Lots Set To Open This Month
Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road Project is set to enhance urban infrastructure with the imminent opening of two twin underground parking lots located at the Worli promenade. These facilities, designed to alleviate parking woes in the bustling city, are expected to become operational within this month. The move aligns with the broader goal of streamlining parking for residents and tourists frequenting the newly developed promenade and surrounding areas, including the popular Worli Sea Face.
Out of the four parking lots originally planned under the Coastal Road Project, the two at Worli are now complete. These facilities, each with a capacity of approximately 198 vehicles, making a combined capacity of 396 vehicles, are located beneath the Coastal Road promenade itself – one at the Bindu Madhav Thackeray Junction and the other opposite Worli Dairy. Access to these parking lots will be provided from Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, also known as Worli Sea Face. Minor finishing touches, such as painting and surfacing of the access roads, are currently underway before their official opening.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been actively working on these crucial additions. Officials from BMC’s Coastal Road Department stated that the facilities will be handed over to the G South Ward office for maintenance once mechanical and electrical works are finalized. While these two parking lots are nearing completion, the status of others varies: a proposed facility at Breach Candy was scrapped due to local opposition, and construction on a four-story underground parking lot at Haji Ali is expected to begin soon and take approximately two years. The Haji Ali facility is planned to accommodate 1,069 cars and 70 buses, catering to anticipated tourist footfall.
The opening of these twin parking lots is a significant step towards optimizing urban space and managing the ever-growing vehicular population in Mumbai. By providing dedicated, well-managed parking solutions, the Coastal Road aims to contribute to smoother traffic flow and a more organized cityscape, ensuring that new infrastructure effectively serves its intended purpose for the benefit of Mumbaikars.
