Mumbai’s ambitious Metro Line 4 achieved a significant construction milestone this past Friday with the successful installation of a colossal 325-tonne steel span. Positioned at Kapurbawadi Junction on Ghodbunder Road, this 48-meter-long structure marks a crucial step for the Wadala-Kasarvadavli corridor. The intricate operation, completed over two nights despite heavy rain and traffic, involved over 100 engineers and multiple heavy-duty cranes, showcasing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) engineering prowess and commitment to timely infrastructure development for faster commutes.
Mumbai’s engineering feat saw the 325-tonne steel span, standing 14 meters high and comprising four massive steel girders, meticulously lifted by 700MT and 550MT cranes, supported by additional backup cranes. Over 100 engineers, workers, and safety staff, alongside 50 trained traffic wardens, collaborated tirelessly to ensure the smooth operation. This high-precision task, completed in just two nights, minimalized disruption on the busy Ghodbunder Road, a critical achievement given the road’s high traffic volume and the limited space due to nearby flyovers, ensuring the city’s traffic flow remained largely unaffected.
Mumbai’s Metro Line 4 is now 84.5% complete, according to MMRDA. This recent installation signifies the completion of all special steel spans between Majiwada and Kasarvadavli, keeping Phase 1 commissioning on track. The 32.32-kilometer elevated corridor, with its 30 stations, is designed to substantially reduce daily commute times by up to 75% in some sections, significantly decongesting the Eastern Express Highway. The line will provide vital interconnectivity to the Eastern Express Roadway, Central Railway, Monorail, and other ongoing metro lines, promising an estimated cost of around ₹14,549 crore.
