Mumbai Goa Car Ferry Train to Launch August 23 Promising Easier Travel
Konkan Railway is set to introduce an innovative car ferry train service connecting Mumbai and Goa. Commencing on August 23, this strategic initiative will transport private vehicles alongside their owners, dramatically reducing the arduous road journey from over 20 hours to a mere 12. This eco-conscious solution promises to alleviate road fatigue, enhance safety, and significantly contribute to a greener, more efficient transportation corridor, aligning with the vision for future-proof urban connectivity.
The new service will operate between Kolad in Maharashtra and Verna in Goa. Each specialised train is designed to accommodate up to 40 private cars, securely stowed across 20 purpose-built wagons. This innovative logistics solution offers a compelling value proposition, with freight charges set at approximately Rs 7,875 per car for a one-way journey. Safety protocols are paramount: vehicles will be meticulously secured, and no individuals will be permitted inside the cars during transit, prioritising passenger well-being.
Accompanying passengers will be accommodated in dedicated coaches, with a maximum of three individuals permitted per vehicle. Fares are competitively priced at Rs 935 for air-conditioned 3AC class and Rs 190 for 2nd class, making this an accessible option for diverse travellers. Trains are scheduled to depart from Kolad in the evening, ensuring an overnight journey that culminates in an early morning arrival at Verna. The service’s viability is contingent on a minimum booking threshold of 16 cars per trip.
This pioneering car ferry service represents a significant step towards sustainable urban and regional mobility. By incentivising a shift from individual long-distance road trips to rail transport, it promises a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, contributing directly to a cleaner environment. Furthermore, it addresses the pervasive issue of driver fatigue on highways, enhancing road safety and reducing the incidence of accidents. For holiday-goers and frequent travellers, it offers a more relaxed and convenient alternative, promoting equitable access to leisure destinations.
The introduction of this service by Konkan Railway is a testament to forward-thinking infrastructure development. By integrating vehicle transport with passenger comfort, it provides a unique value proposition that is both economically viable and environmentally responsible. This innovative offering is set to transform travel between these two key regions, fostering safer journeys, reducing ecological impact, and setting a precedent for future intermodal transportation solutions that serve the larger interest of society.
