Mohali Inaugurates High-Capacity STP to Boost Wastewater Recycling, Cut Groundwater Use

Mohali has taken a major step toward sustainable urban growth with the inauguration of a 15 million gallons per day (MGD) sewage treatment plant. Developed at a cost of ₹145.26 crore, the facility uses advanced filtration and treatment technologies to maximise wastewater reuse across municipal functions. Authorities said the plant will reduce the city’s dependence on fresh groundwater and help meet future water demands, while supporting long-term ecological goals and efficient urban infrastructure expansion in Punjab.

The newly inaugurated 15 MGD sewage treatment plant in Mohali reflects a shift in Punjab’s infrastructure strategy toward resource conservation and sustainable urban planning. Built with advanced treatment technologies, including micro-filtration and tertiary-level ultra-filtration, the facility is designed to repurpose treated wastewater for irrigation, toilet flushing, street cleaning, and other non-potable applications. A senior official involved in the project highlighted that this move will ease the pressure on overexploited groundwater reserves. In addition, a 5 MGD tertiary treatment facility using ultra-filtration — the first of its kind in Punjab — has been co-located to enhance water quality for reuse. A 1 MW solar plant installed at the site ensures low energy dependence, aligning with renewable energy goals. According to experts, the project sets a benchmark for sustainable water infrastructure in the region. It is part of a wider vision to implement similar sewage and reuse facilities across urban zones in Punjab.

Planned and executed by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), the STP project anticipates Mohali’s urban and population growth for the next two decades. Experts say it is strategically aligned with state-level goals for green infrastructure and efficient municipal services. The facility is expected to serve as a replicable model for similar plants in Punjab’s 166 urban centres, where a comprehensive urban development plan is scheduled for rollout. This plan includes upgrades in water supply, sewerage, sanitation, and public lighting. Officials noted that projects like the Mohali STP promote circular water use, significantly cutting fresh water withdrawal and improving local water security. The STP’s integration with a solar energy unit also addresses rising operational costs and carbon emissions. Authorities believe that such forward-looking infrastructure, combining technology with environmental consciousness, will help build climate-resilient cities across Punjab, reducing pollution and creating long-term ecological balance in rapidly urbanising districts.
