Varanasi is witnessing steady progress on the new rail-cum-road bridge over the Ganga, located just 50 metres from the existing Malviya Bridge. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity while addressing key challenges such as traffic rerouting, land acquisition, and utility integration. Officials overseeing the project recently conducted an on-site inspection to review development stages and resolve critical issues to ensure timely completion.
The railway authorities have already initiated the tendering process for construction, with bids expected by August and contracts likely to be finalised by November 2025. This timeline underscores the government’s commitment to advancing the project with minimal delays. However, managing the existing traffic flow has emerged as a significant challenge. Since the new bridge’s alignment overlaps the current road, officials have explored four alternative traffic rerouting options to mitigate disruption during construction. A final plan is expected soon, aiming to maintain smooth transit for commuters and freight. Another pivotal aspect examined was the matter of land ownership on the approach roads near the Grand Trunk Road. Representatives from the revenue department confirmed that land acquisition issues have been largely resolved, as the required areas fall under government control—either state, railway, or defence property. This ensures that bureaucratic hurdles will not impede the project’s progress, reflecting effective coordination among departments.
Beyond traffic and land concerns, the project integrates a wider developmental vision by addressing local economic growth. Particular attention is being paid to improving road access to Namo Ghat, a site of cultural and touristic significance.
