Indian Railways Starts Cherry Cargo Service to Mumbai

In a major boost to Jammu and Kashmir’s horticulture sector, Indian Railways has launched its first-ever dedicated cherry cargo service from Katra Railway Station to Mumbai.

The service commenced on Saturday in collaboration with the Horticulture Department of J&K, marking a significant leap in the region’s agricultural logistics. This pioneering initiative aims to provide local horticulturists with a fast, reliable, and cost-effective transportation network for perishable produce, ensuring wider market access and reduced spoilage. The move is expected to improve profitability for fruit growers and promote high-value produce like cherries to metropolitan markets. Officials from Indian Railways and the Horticulture Department flagged off the inaugural cargo shipment, highlighting the project’s potential to streamline agricultural logistics across the Union Territory. By integrating cold-chain rail services, the railways have positioned themselves as a key logistics partner for farmers and fruit producers.

“This service is a historic step towards ensuring time-bound delivery of fresh fruits from Jammu and Kashmir to distant consumer hubs. It underlines our commitment to strengthening the agri-supply chain,” said a senior railway official. The freight service is also part of a broader strategy to utilise underused cargo potential in Indian Railways, especially for agri-produce from remote and high-altitude regions. With the cherry harvest season in full swing, this service arrives at a crucial time. It not only connects producers to Mumbai’s vast retail and wholesale markets but also lays the groundwork for similar freight corridors for apples, pears, and other seasonal produce.

This dedicated cargo link is expected to become a regular fixture, supporting farmers, reducing post-harvest losses, and contributing to the economic development of the horticulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir.
