IndianOil to Build India Largest Green Hydrogen Plant
IndianOil has finalised plans to set up a 10,000 tonnes per annum green hydrogen generation unit at its Panipat Refinery & Petrochemical Complex, marking a critical milestone in India’s clean energy transition.
The plant, slated for commissioning by December 2027, will be the country’s largest green hydrogen facility to date. This initiative signals IndianOil’s strategic entry into the green hydrogen sector and supports the government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. Once operational, the plant will replace fossil-fuel-based hydrogen currently used in refinery processes, substantially reducing carbon emissions and aiding the company’s broader decarbonisation goals.
In a statement issued Friday, IndianOil confirmed that the Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH) has been finalised and that tenders for the project are under evaluation. The green hydrogen will play a key role in transforming the Panipat refinery into a more sustainable and environment-friendly operation. The move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s green energy vision and IndianOil’s Net Zero targets. It also reflects the company’s leadership in steering India’s shift towards low-carbon technologies. Speaking at the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos, IOC Chairman Arvinder Singh Sahney said, “Green hydrogen plant is now alive. We have got very good bids for it. Within a month or so, we will be able to award the job, and within two years, the 10,000 TPA plant at Panipat will be commissioned.”
This landmark project is expected to be a cornerstone in India’s energy transformation journey and reaffirms IndianOil’s position at the forefront of the green energy revolution.
