CR enhances safety with audio alert system for trains

The Central Railway (CR) has taken a significant step to improve commuter safety by implementing Audio Alert System in the driving cabs of suburban local trains. This system is designed to reduce the risk of accidents, collisions, and derailments caused by human error. It will provide audio warnings to alert train operators about red signals during the operation of Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) rakes.

The Audio Alert System, installed in the motorman’s coach, will notify the train operator when approaching a red signal, prompting them to bring the train to a complete stop. This measure is aimed at preventing Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) incidents, enhancing safety on the busy Mumbai suburban rail network.

Currently, this system has been installed in 90 out of the total 151 EMU rakes in the CR Mumbai Division. The remaining 71 rakes are scheduled to be equipped with the Audio Alert System by March 2024. The cost of implementing the system is approximately INR 18,000 per rake.

By providing an audible warning to train operators when a red signal is imminent, the CR aims to bolster passenger safety and prevent accidents. This initiative is particularly crucial in a network known for its heavy passenger traffic and the need for precise signalling.

With the implementation of the Audio Alert System, the Central Railway is taking a significant step toward further improving the safety and reliability of the Mumbai local train services.
