India and Pakistan, several Asian airlines have been compelled to reroute or cancel flights traversing the affected regions.
The closure of Pakistani airspace, coupled with restrictions in northern Indian airspace, has led to significant disruptions in international air travel. On May 7, 2025, India conducted airstrikes on multiple locations within Pakistan, including the disputed Kashmir region. Pakistan responded by shooting down five Indian jets and closing its airspace to commercial flights. In retaliation, Pakistan banned Indian carriers such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet from its airspace, further complicating international flight routes .
The immediate impact on air travel has been profound. According to FlightRadar24, over 50 commercial flights were canceled, and more than two dozen were rerouted to avoid Pakistani airspace. Aircraft-tracking data indicated that numerous planes typically flying over Pakistan and northern India diverted their paths, adding several hours to journey times. Major Asian carriers have been particularly affected. Thai Airways canceled all flights to and from Pakistan and Europe that would have flown over Pakistani airspace. Similarly, EVA Air, Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, and China Airlines have announced schedule changes and activated contingency safety measures. These adjustments have led to unscheduled stops in the Middle East, including cities like Muscat, Dubai, and Kuwait City, to refuel and ensure passenger safety .
The rerouting of flights has not only increased travel times but also raised operational costs. Extended flight durations necessitate additional fuel, leading to increased expenses for airlines. For instance, Indian carriers are estimated to incur an additional monthly operational cost of approximately ₹306 crore due to rerouted international flights . Passengers have expressed frustration over the disruptions. Many have been stranded at airports, facing delays and cancellations without adequate assistance. The lack of clear communication from airlines and the absence of contingency plans have exacerbated the situation.
As the situation remains fluid, airlines continue to monitor developments and adjust their operations accordingly.
