Organic Vegetable Sales Expand Across Six Thanjavur Markets

Organic vegetable sales have begun at Kumbakonam Uzhavar Sandhai, with 12 shops allotted for the produce and nearly 1,305 kilograms brought in for sale, as Tamil Nadu expands the initiative to six farmers’ markets in Thanjavur district.

Agriculture minister R. Vinoth inaugurated the sale at the Kumbakonam farmers’ market on Saturday. Minister for minorities welfare A.M. Shahjahan and Thanjavur Collector R. Revathi were present at the inauguration.

According to Vinoth, the newly allotted shops will be used specifically for the sale of organic vegetables at the Kumbakonam Uzhavar Sandhai. The first reported supply for the initiative was nearly 1,305 kilograms, although the supplied report does not specify the number of participating farmers, the prices charged or how frequently the produce will be replenished.

The organic vegetable initiative has also been introduced at Uzhavar Sandhais in Thanjavur, Thirukattuppalli, Papanasam, Peravurani and Pattukottai. Together, these markets create a district-level network for bringing organic produce into established public-facing retail spaces rather than limiting sales to private outlets or specialised stores.

Uzhavar Sandhais are designed as direct market points for agricultural produce. At the participating markets, the range of goods includes traditional varieties of rice, millets, pulses, vegetables, fruits, chillies, turmeric, pepper, country-breed chicken, eggs and honey. The introduction of dedicated organic vegetable shops adds another category to the produce available to urban and town residents through the farmers’ market system.

The expansion also places responsibility on market and agriculture officials to manage the new sales arrangements. Sudha, commissioner of Kumbakonam city corporation, Sarumathi, joint director of agriculture, and Thirumalai, revenue divisional officer of Kumbakonam, participated in the inauguration. Their presence reflects the involvement of municipal, agriculture and revenue authorities in the operation.

For consumers, the immediate change is the availability of organic vegetables at designated shops within the Kumbakonam market and at five other farmers’ markets in the district. However, the information available does not establish whether the produce will carry a common certification system, whether supply will be available daily, or how the authorities will communicate prices and product origins to buyers.

The announcement therefore marks the start of an expanded retail channel, rather than providing evidence yet on its scale or performance. The initial supply of nearly 1,305 kilograms and the allocation of 12 shops at Kumbakonam provide the first measurable details of the programme. Further information on daily sales, consumer demand, farmer participation and continuity of supply will determine how effectively the initiative operates across the six markets.
