Sonowal Reviews Progress of Dibrugarh Airport’s Runway Expansion Project
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently chaired a meeting of the Dibrugarh Airport advisory committee to assess the progress of the airport’s runway expansion project. This expansion is set to significantly enhance the airport’s infrastructure and boost connectivity in the region, contributing to the growth of Northeast India.
The review meeting, held on Monday, focused on key aspects of the ongoing project, ensuring that it aligns with the region’s developmental goals. Officials provided updates on the progress of construction, which is expected to be completed by the end of next year. The runway expansion is part of a broader effort to modernise Dibrugarh Airport, transforming it into a major gateway for both domestic and international flights. In his address, Sonowal highlighted the transformative growth Dibrugarh has witnessed since 2014, particularly under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Dibrugarh has become a symbol of prosperity for Northeast India,” he said. “With improved infrastructure and enhanced connectivity, the airport is now central to driving trade, tourism, and economic development in the region.”
The Union Minister emphasised the impact of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme in reshaping India’s aviation landscape. The scheme, launched by the Modi government, has been instrumental in improving regional connectivity by increasing flight frequencies, modernising airport facilities, and making air travel more accessible to a wider population. “Dibrugarh, as a vital hub for Assam and the Northeast, is seeing significant focus from the central government. The ongoing modernisation efforts are not only accelerating the airport’s infrastructure but also positioning it as a beacon of progress for the region,” Sonowal added. Airport officials also expressed optimism about the future of Dibrugarh Airport, citing the runway expansion as a key milestone that will improve the region’s air traffic capacity and attract more tourists and business opportunities. They noted that the expanded runway will accommodate larger aircraft, further facilitating increased flight operations and broader connectivity. As Dibrugarh continues to evolve into a key player in Northeast India’s growth, the runway expansion marks a significant step in fostering economic development, connecting the region to the world, and supporting its dynamic future.
