A car carrying five people overturned into a 20-foot ditch near a dangerous bend on an unlit road in Hosur after the driver reportedly failed to notice the curve while returning from a hilltop temple on November 5 night, according to Dinamalar. All five occupants, including three children, were injured in the crash.
The incident occurred on the road leading towards Therpettai after the group visited the Maragathambigai temple associated with the Chandrasoodeswarar Temple on the Hosur hill. Dinakaran, 57, from Tirupattur district, was driving the car. His wife, Lakshmi, 47, and three children who were relatives were also travelling in the vehicle.
According to the report, the road has a sharp bend but no lighting facility at the location. The curve is familiar to motorists who use the road regularly, but new drivers may not recognise it, particularly at night. Dinakaran reportedly believed that the road continued straight and drove into the bend, causing the car to overturn into the ditch.
The five occupants sustained injuries in the accident. The report did not provide details about the severity of their injuries or identify the hospital where they were treated.
The crash has drawn attention to the safety conditions on the approach road to the temple. Dinamalar reported that accidents frequently occur at the bend, and devotees have sought the installation of a metal barrier to prevent vehicles from leaving the road. They have also requested street lighting at the location.
The reported absence of basic safety measures highlights the risks faced on hill roads and access routes where curves, changes in gradient and roadside drops may not be visible to unfamiliar motorists after dark. A guardrail could help reduce the consequences of a vehicle leaving the carriageway, while lighting could improve visibility of the bend for drivers approaching the area.
The report did not identify the agency responsible for maintaining the road or state whether any authority had announced immediate safety measures following the crash. The requests from devotees are for a protective barrier and lighting to be provided at the dangerous bend.
