Pune Ration Rice Supply Delayed as 1,400 Tonnes Await Delivery

Pune ration rice supply has been delayed ahead of Diwali, leaving beneficiaries waiting for the full monthly allocation even as wheat has reached fair price shops across the city. Officials said only 1,500 tonnes of the required 2,900 tonnes of rice had reached shops so far, with the remaining stock expected within two days.

The delay has forced some ration-card holders to make repeated visits to shops to ask when rice will be available. Shopkeepers have also faced complaints from customers because they cannot distribute the expected wheat-and-rice allocation together when one of the two commodities is unavailable.

According to foodgrain distribution officer Prashant Khatal, Pune city requires about 3,900 tonnes of wheat and 2,900 tonnes of rice each month. Wheat supply for the current cycle has been completed, while the rice delivered to shops represents slightly more than half of the monthly requirement. The remaining 1,400 tonnes, he said, would reach shops over the next two days.

Distribution of the pending stock will begin after the rice reaches the shops, the official said. Until then, beneficiaries in areas awaiting supplies may have to return to ration outlets to collect the remaining grain. The timing is significant because many households depend on the monthly allocation for food requirements during the Diwali period.

The ration shopkeepers’ association said the distribution system creates difficulties when wheat and rice are expected to be issued together. Association president Ganesh Dangi said that even when one grain is available, shops face difficulty completing the allocation if the other has not arrived. Customers from areas where rice has not been delivered have been visiting shops for updates, he said, and repeated visits have led to disputes between beneficiaries and shopkeepers.

The state has extended the deadline for distributing October’s foodgrain allocation to 12 November after beneficiaries in several parts of Maharashtra reportedly remained without supplies. Pune has completed 93% of the distribution so far, according to the report. The remaining grain is to be distributed by the extended deadline under instructions issued at the state level.

The episode highlights the operational dependence of the public distribution system on timely movement of each commodity in an allocation. For beneficiaries, the availability of wheat alone does not resolve the immediate requirement when rice is also due through the same ration channel. The next administrative milestone is the arrival of the remaining 1,400 tonnes and its distribution before 12 November.
