Tamil Nadu Power Supply Set for Deepavali as Shutdowns Restricted

Tamil Nadu has made arrangements to maintain uninterrupted power supply across the state on Deepavali, Energy Resources Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar said on Thursday, with electricity officials instructed to prevent avoidable outages and respond to consumer complaints during the festival.

The minister said the electricity department had been directed to ensure that consumers did not face power cuts on Deepavali day. Officials have also been asked to conduct adequate inspections and avoid unnecessary shutdowns, according to his remarks to reporters in Madurai.

The announcement places local electricity operations at the centre of the state’s festival-day preparations. Maintaining supply during a major festival requires field officials to monitor networks, assess planned maintenance requirements and respond to interruptions reported by consumers. The minister did not provide details of the number of personnel deployed, the specific areas identified for additional monitoring or the duration of the service arrangements.

Consumers will be able to lodge complaints if their electricity supply is interrupted, Nirmal Kumar said. The statement did not specify a dedicated helpline, complaint portal or response-time target. It also did not outline whether the arrangements would involve additional repair teams, standby equipment or revised maintenance schedules.

The minister was speaking after inaugurating a newly constructed building at a government higher secondary school in Puliyankulam near Thiruparankundram in Madurai. His comments covered the state-wide electricity supply plan as well as several other issues, including the arrest of former minister Anbil Mahesh, a proposed crop-loan waiver and rising prices of essential commodities.

On the electricity arrangements, the key operational instruction was to avoid unnecessary power shutdowns while ensuring that inspections were carried out. This indicates that the department’s festival-day plan includes both preventive checks and restrictions on avoidable interruptions. The statement did not say whether any emergency conditions or technical faults could still lead to outages.

The minister’s assurance comes as residents and businesses prepare for Deepavali-related activity across Tamil Nadu. Electricity supply supports household use, commercial operations and public services, making the reliability of local distribution networks a practical concern during the festival. The department’s ability to act on complaints and restore supply will depend on the instructions reaching field-level officials and on repair teams being available when required.

The announcement is an administrative assurance rather than a change to the state’s electricity policy. No new generation project, tariff decision, distribution investment or system-capacity figure was announced. The immediate focus is on maintaining service continuity, carrying out inspections and limiting planned shutdowns on the festival day.

Nirmal Kumar said the public could report interruptions to the electricity department. Further details on the complaint mechanism, field deployment and the implementation of the instructions were not provided in the statement.
