Telangana Adds Six Automated Driving Test Tracks to Cut Licence Bias

Telangana will set up six Automated Driving Licence Test Tracks across Hyderabad’s neighbouring districts and Karimnagar under an agreement between Maruti Suzuki India Limited and the state Transport department, with the technology intended to make driving tests more transparent and reduce human error.

The tracks will be established at Ibrahimpatnam and Kondapur in Rangareddy district, Uppal, Medchal and Nagole in Medchal district, and Karimnagar. They will test applicants seeking licences for two-wheelers, light motor vehicles and heavy motor vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Transport department on Thursday to establish the facilities. The tracks will use high-definition cameras, RFID sensors, real-time analytics and an integrated information technology system to conduct computerised, rule-based assessments.

According to the report, the testing process will be aligned with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. The automated system is intended to evaluate applicants against prescribed driving requirements and reduce the scope for human bias and error in the licensing process.

The move places the assessment stage of the driving-licence system within a broader road-safety effort by the Telangana Transport department. Transport Commissioner K Ilambarithi said the department was working to build safer roads through technology, stronger enforcement and improved driver testing.

“The new tracks will make driving tests more transparent and efficient, while ensuring that only competent and qualified applicants are awarded driving licences,” Ilambarithi said.

For applicants, the immediate change will be the introduction of technology-led testing at six locations rather than an assessment based only on manual observation. The supplied report does not specify the construction schedule, operational start dates, application process or whether existing test centres will be replaced or supplemented by the new tracks.

The proposed system will also generate digital records through cameras, sensors and analytics. These features are expected to provide an auditable assessment trail, although the department and Maruti Suzuki have not, in the supplied information, detailed how applicants will access results, challenge an assessment or receive support if the system records a technical failure.

Rahul Bharti, Corporate Affairs Senior Executive Officer at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the Automated Driving Licence Test Tracks would bring fairness and transparency to licensing by eliminating human bias. The Transport department has identified the six locations, while further implementation details were not provided in the announcement.
