Nagpur Municipal Corporation has directed officials to accelerate delayed civic projects, including the Raje Raghuji Town Hall at Mahal, with the facility being targeted for inauguration during the state legislature’s winter session. Mayor Neeta Thakre reviewed the projects on Wednesday and expressed displeasure over delays in execution.
The heritage redevelopment and modern civic facility project has received a state government sanction of Rs 125.75 crore. However, it has missed several deadlines, with the latest extended completion deadline expiring on September 30. The civic body has also spent another Rs 20 crore on interior works, according to the report.
During the review, Thakre instructed officials to complete pending works on priority and seek state government funding for projects that require additional financial assistance. She also asked departments to secure the necessary no-objection certificates in advance so that completed facilities do not face delays before inauguration.
The proposed inauguration of the Town Hall during the winter session places the project among the civic works being prioritised ahead of the legislature’s visit to Nagpur. The review also covered the NMC headquarters’ main entrance gate, which ruling party leader Narendra Borkar directed officials to complete before the session.
Several health, market and public facility projects were also discussed. Officials said work on the proposed hospital at Minimata Nagar and Devadia Hospital at Queta Colony was nearing completion. The proposed food court at Narendra Nagar, the beautification of Dr Hedgewar Square on Wardha Road, including a fountain, and the Bhandewadi fish market were reviewed as part of the same exercise. The fish market is expected to be completed by December.
The Bhandewadi dog shelter was reported to be in its final stage. The facility is intended to support the sterilisation of stray dogs and the treatment of injured and sick animals in accordance with Supreme Court directions. The civic administration also reviewed construction of a working women’s hostel at Jaitala and fire stations at Lakadganj, KT Nagar, Old Bagadganj and Ganjipeth.
Officials discussed proposals to procure specialised equipment for tackling fires in high-rise buildings. The meeting also examined the progress of the Jijau Centre at Shankar Nagar, which is being developed for women belonging to self-help groups.
The review reflects the range of municipal responsibilities tied to the winter session, from heritage redevelopment and healthcare facilities to fire response, animal welfare, markets and women-focused civic infrastructure. Thakre stressed better coordination between officials and employees to ensure that development works are completed on time.
The NMC’s immediate focus is to finish pending works, obtain outstanding clearances and advance projects that officials have identified as nearing completion. The Town Hall and the other reviewed facilities will now be subject to the civic body’s accelerated execution schedule ahead of the winter session.
