BSE Infrastructure Plans Expand as Profit Jumps 45% to ₹809 Crore

BSE will expand its physical and digital infrastructure in Mumbai after reporting a 44.9 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to ₹809.15 crore for the quarter ended September, with the exchange saying its existing data centre has around 500 racks and is fully allocated.

The exchange is building another 170-190 racks to add capacity. Its board has also approved accepting the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s offer of a plot in Bandra-Kurla Complex for additional premises and infrastructure. BSE said formalities were still under way and that it was too early to outline detailed plans for the site.

The infrastructure expansion comes as BSE reported revenue from operations of ₹1,432.66 crore for the quarter, up 34.1 per cent from the same period a year earlier. However, performance was lower sequentially, with net profit falling 7.4 per cent and revenue declining 8.5 per cent from the June quarter, when profit stood at ₹874.02 crore and revenue at ₹1,566.02 crore.

The exchange recorded its highest-ever quarterly average daily turnover of ₹10,494 crore in the equity cash segment during the quarter. BSE attributed pressure on equity-market volumes to foreign portfolio investor outflows and broader macroeconomic uncertainty. It also said new initial public offerings were generating encouraging trading volumes.

In index options, average daily premium turnover fell to ₹22,531 crore from ₹29,615 crore in the first quarter, which BSE linked to lower volatility and temporary shifts in market participation. The exchange reported a recovery in September and said monthly premium turnover reached a record ₹35,481 crore in October. Its highest single-day expiry premium turnover was ₹85,356 crore on October 22.

BSE said its cash-equity market share had not yet reached double digits. Its market share in monthly index options contracts was around 2-3 per cent, while its share during non-expiry weeks was 6-7 per cent.

The exchange also said it was difficult to isolate the effect of the Reserve Bank of India’s bank guarantee norms on volumes and collateral because of concurrent regulatory changes, initial teething issues with a new system and global uncertainty. Existing bank guarantees with unexpired tenures further complicated the assessment.

Co-location and other connectivity charges, including throttle charges, generated ₹103 crore in the first half of FY27. BSE said it had submitted applications to regulators for MSCI-linked derivatives and was awaiting the final outcome.

The exchange reported an EBITDA margin of 67-68 per cent and said a margin of 65-70 per cent appeared sustainable. It added that any changes to transaction and co-location charges would depend on market feedback. The detailed development plan for the proposed Bandra-Kurla Complex premises is expected to follow after the required formalities are completed.
