Gujarat PNG gas prices have come under political scrutiny after the Gujarat Congress alleged that households in different cities are paying substantially different rates for piped natural gas supplied by multiple companies. The party has demanded a “one state, one gas price” policy across Gujarat, along with uniform measurement standards.
According to figures cited by the Gujarat Congress and reported by Gujarat Samachar, Adani Gas customers in Ahmedabad are charged ₹1,473, while consumers in Surendranagar pay ₹1,347. The party said the ₹126 difference means Ahmedabad households are paying more for the same utility supplied by the same company. The report does not specify the billing period or the precise unit represented by these figures.
The Congress also compared prices charged by Gujarat Gas, a state-owned company. It alleged that Gujarat Gas supplies PNG in Gujarat at ₹1,377, while its customers in Rajasthan receive the gas at a rate ₹56 lower. Sabarmati Gas, another supplier operating in the state, was cited as charging ₹1,439.
The allegations were raised by Gujarat Congress as part of its demand for greater uniformity in household gas pricing. The party said the differences cannot be assessed only by comparing company tariffs because suppliers also use different systems to measure gas consumption.
The Congress said Adani Gas, Gujarat Gas and Sabarmati Gas calculate gas using MMBtu, or metric million British thermal units. It added that Vadodara Gas Company and IRM use square cubic metres to determine prices. The party argued that different measurement methods and standards make it difficult for consumers to compare charges across cities and suppliers.
The demand comes as the Congress claims that gas prices have recently increased, adding to household expenses. It said consumers across Gujarat should receive PNG at a uniform rate, regardless of the company supplying the gas or the city in which they live.
The figures and comparisons in the report are allegations and claims made by the Gujarat Congress. The supplied report does not include a response from Adani Gas, Gujarat Gas, Sabarmati Gas, Vadodara Gas Company, IRM or the Gujarat government, nor does it provide tariff notifications or billing documents independently confirming the cited rates. The Congress’s stated next step is to press for a common pricing and measurement framework for PNG suppliers across Gujarat.
