Ahmedabad’s SG Highway traffic jam stretched for about 2.5 kilometres towards Gandhinagar after a 2012-model Maruti Swift caught fire near the Thaltej underpass on Wednesday, disrupting traffic during peak hours. The driver escaped after noticing smoke from the vehicle, and no casualties were reported.
The fire broke out on the stretch from Iskcon towards Gandhinagar, according to a report by Gujarat Samachar – Ahmedabad. The driver left the car in time after smoke began emerging from it. The vehicle was subsequently engulfed in flames and was completely destroyed.
The incident took place at the Thaltej underpass, a busy section of SG Highway that carries traffic between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. With the burning vehicle obstructing movement, vehicles travelling towards Gandhinagar began slowing down and the congestion quickly extended to approximately 2.5 kilometres.
The fire did not result in any reported loss of life. The incident nevertheless caused a significant disruption on one of Ahmedabad’s major road corridors, where traffic volumes are particularly high during peak periods. The report did not specify the cause of the fire.
Police reached the location after being alerted and began efforts to clear the affected road section and remove vehicles held up in the jam. Traffic movement was being restored as the clearance operation continued.
