As the ambitious Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project progresses, the National Capital Region (NCR) is grappling with significant traffic disruptions, especially in areas surrounding Kalindi Kunj Junction. The construction of a crucial bridge at Agra Canal Road, a key segment of the expressway, has led to prolonged congestion, primarily affecting commuters travelling between Delhi, Noida, and Faridabad. With work expected to continue for several months, the Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory to help residents navigate these challenges.
The ongoing construction around Kalindi Kunj Junction has resulted in severe delays during peak hours, as it serves as a vital intersection for those travelling between the capital and neighbouring states. For commuters heading from Faridabad to Noida, it is advised to opt for alternative routes, such as Mathura Road and Road No. 13-Noida. Those travelling from Noida to Delhi are encouraged to use the DND Flyover. The traffic advisory urges people to avoid the affected areas during peak times, highlighting the importance of public transport to reduce congestion.
These disruptions come at a time when the NCR is already dealing with an increase in road traffic. Public transport, though encouraged, is not always a feasible alternative for everyone, especially during rush hours. In addition to the inconvenience faced by commuters, the prolonged construction work is contributing to environmental concerns, as increased traffic congestion leads to more emissions and worsens air quality. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, once completed, promises to significantly improve connectivity and reduce travel time, but in the interim, residents are bearing the brunt of its construction.
From a sustainability perspective, while the project holds long-term benefits in terms of improved infrastructure and reduced travel time, the temporary traffic woes serve as a reminder of the immediate challenges posed by urban development. The authorities’ push for public transport adoption during construction is a step in the right direction, as it could help reduce the carbon footprint during this transitional phase. The success of this project, in the context of cleaner air and reduced traffic congestion, will depend heavily on the balancing act between development and environmental responsibility.
