Surat Firecracker Stall Fire Exposes Roadside Safety Risks

A roadside firecracker stall at Kiran Chowk in Surat’s Puna area caught fire late Monday, destroying its stock within minutes and causing panic among residents, pedestrians and commuters. No injuries were reported, and the blaze was contained before it spread to other stalls.

The fire broke out while firecrackers were displayed on the footpath, where traffic and pedestrian movement continued around the stall. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Once the crackers ignited, the stock was destroyed rapidly, leaving little time for people nearby to react.

The incident has renewed concern over the operation of roadside firecracker stalls in densely used parts of the city. Officials said such incidents are reported every year and pose risks to residents, motorists and pedestrians, particularly when combustible material is stored in the open and close to moving traffic.

A fire department official said many stalls operate without the required permissions and lack basic firefighting equipment. “Selling crackers this way in the open and on roadsides without firefighting equipment is dangerous. If police tell them to leave, they set up the stall at some other location but remain beside roads,” the official said.

The reported conditions highlight the difficulty of managing temporary seasonal vending in busy urban areas. A stall placed on a footpath affects pedestrian space, while the presence of firecrackers adds a higher-risk use to an already crowded public corridor. In the event of a fire, the same congestion can also complicate movement for bystanders, traffic and emergency responders.

Authorities have repeatedly warned against the illegal roadside sale of firecrackers. Officials stressed the need for designated vending spaces, basic fire-safety arrangements and enforcement measures to prevent similar incidents. The concerns include whether vendors have permissions, how much stock is stored at each location and whether stalls are positioned away from roads, pedestrians and other combustible material.

The fire did not result in reported injuries, but the rapid destruction of the stock illustrates how quickly a small roadside incident can become a wider public-safety emergency when fireworks are displayed in an open and heavily used area. The immediate fire was contained before spreading to other stalls, according to the report.

Authorities’ stated next steps are continued enforcement against unauthorised roadside stalls, along with the provision of designated vending spaces and minimum fire-safety arrangements for permitted sellers.
