Sankalp Sharma, a 2012-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been appointed Joint Police Commissioner of the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissionerate, bringing an experienced officer with prior Noida experience back to the city’s senior police administration.
The transfer from the Kanpur Nagar Police Commissionerate was announced through an order issued by the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday. Sharma will take over the law-and-order responsibilities after the retirement of Rajiv Narayan Mishra, according to a report by Navbharat Times – Noida.
Sharma’s appointment comes as Noida and the wider Gautam Buddh Nagar region continue to combine fast population growth, industrial activity, residential expansion and international connectivity. The police administration’s key responsibilities include crime control, cybercrime response, traffic management, industrial security and the maintenance of public order across the commissionerate.
The officer began his police career with a posting in Meerut and has since served in Lucknow, Noida, Azamgarh, Basti and Lakhimpur Kheri. In February 2026, he was transferred from Mirzapur to the Kanpur Nagar Police Commissionerate, where he was appointed Joint Police Commissioner. His latest posting moves him to one of Uttar Pradesh’s prominent urban and industrial policing jurisdictions.
Sharma has previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in Noida in 2020. That experience gives him familiarity with Gautam Buddh Nagar’s geography, law-and-order arrangements and local policing challenges. As Joint Police Commissioner, however, he will now hold a broader administrative role within the commissionerate.
According to the report, Sharma has received three appreciation letters from the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police during his service. These include a silver commendation dated 26 January 2020, a gold commendation dated 15 August 2022 and a platinum commendation dated 15 August 2024.
Sharma, 40, was born on 11 July 1986 and is originally from Jaipur, Rajasthan. He studied at IIT Roorkee, where he completed a BTech in Chemical Engineering and an MTech in Hydrocarbon Engineering. He cleared the Union Public Service Commission examination after two unsuccessful attempts.
His wife, Shalini Agnihotri, is an IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. The two met during IPS training and now serve in their respective cadres, with Sharma posted in Uttar Pradesh and Agnihotri in Himachal Pradesh.
The new Joint Police Commissioner’s immediate responsibilities will centre on crime prevention, cybercrime enforcement, traffic regulation, industrial-area security and strengthening public confidence in policing. The Uttar Pradesh government’s transfer order marks the formal start of his new assignment in Gautam Buddh Nagar.
