Tata Projects Secures Major Contract for Maharashtra Auto Plant

Tata Projects has secured a major engineering, procurement and construction contract for a greenfield automotive plant in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, expanding the Tata Group company’s role in advanced manufacturing infrastructure.

The contract, announced by Tata Projects on Tuesday, covers three core packages at the facility: the assembly shop, the press and weld shop, and utility and support buildings. The company did not disclose the identity of the global automotive manufacturer or the value of the contract.

Tata Projects said its mandate includes civil, structural and architectural works, along with mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. It will also develop utility networks and undertake testing, commissioning and handover of the completed packages.

The scope brings together the main production buildings and the support systems required to operate them. According to the company, the integrated nature of the work will require coordination across multiple engineering disciplines, construction activities, specialist partners and suppliers.

“ We have partnered with a leading global automotive manufacturer in creating a facility that will contribute to this journey,” Rajiv Menon, President and Chief Growth & Strategy Officer at Tata Projects, said in the company’s statement.

Menon said the mandate represented a step towards broadening Tata Projects’ presence in advanced manufacturing. He added that the company would bring its integrated engineering and execution capabilities to the project.

An assembly shop is typically the production area where vehicle components are brought together, while press and weld facilities support the shaping and joining of major elements. The utility and support buildings provide the infrastructure needed to serve the plant’s operational requirements. Tata Projects did not provide further technical details about the planned facility.

The company described the contract as an important milestone in its expansion into the automotive sector and said it reinforced its position as a partner for complex industrial infrastructure. It said the project would involve a broad network of partners and suppliers in addition to multiple specialist disciplines.

The mandate adds to Tata Projects’ stated experience in technology-intensive construction. The company said its work across semiconductor facilities, battery plants, data centres and other advanced manufacturing projects had helped build capabilities relevant to the automotive plant assignment.

The announcement does not specify the project’s construction schedule, commissioning date, investment size or expected production capacity. It also does not establish whether the contract covers the entire proposed plant or only the three packages identified by Tata Projects. Further details will depend on disclosures by the company and the unnamed automotive manufacturer as the project progresses.
