Andheri West motorists face a seven-month traffic disruption after the bridge over Mogra nullah was closed to vehicular movement for demolition and reconstruction by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The traffic police said the bridge connecting Sab TV Road to Link Road is expected to reopen by May 2027.
Officials said the bridge has become dilapidated, prompting the civic body to plan its complete demolition and rebuilding. The closure will remain in force throughout the construction period, making the announced diversions the designated routes for vehicles moving between the surrounding roads.
Light vehicles travelling southbound from Lokhandwala Complex Road on the Sab TV Road carriageway, also known as Pramod Navalkar Marg, will have to turn left and then take a right at Hotel Empire. They will then proceed via Hotel Kalinga and New Link Road to reach their destinations.
For light vehicles travelling northbound on New Link Road, the traffic police have directed motorists to turn left at Hotel Kalinga. Vehicles can then take either a left or right turn at Hotel Empire before proceeding via Lokhandwala Complex Road.
The bridge is an important local connection between Sab TV Road and Link Road in Andheri West. Its closure will shift traffic onto the surrounding road network while the existing structure is removed and a replacement is built. The traffic police announcement provides separate route instructions for vehicles approaching from the Lokhandwala Complex Road side and those using New Link Road.
The project also highlights the operational consequences of rebuilding ageing urban bridges in densely developed parts of Mumbai. While demolition and reconstruction are intended to address the condition of the structure, the work requires a complete stoppage of vehicular movement rather than a partial restriction, according to the announced traffic arrangements.
The traffic police have asked motorists to use the specified alternative routes during the closure. The BMC’s stated target is to complete the demolition and reconstruction and reopen the bridge by May 2027.
