Godda Cement Plant Plan Adds 2.9 MTPA to Ambuja Expansion

Ambuja Cements Ltd has proposed a 2.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) cement grinding unit in Godda district, Jharkhand, as part of a Rs 14,500-crore expansion programme aimed at increasing the company’s total cement capacity to 155 MTPA by financial year 2029-30.

The Adani Group company announced the proposed Godda facility as part of a wider plan to expand its manufacturing network across eastern and northeastern India. Ambuja’s total cement capacity currently stands at 113.5 MTPA, according to a company statement issued on Monday.

The project is expected to strengthen Godda’s industrial presence and support employment across plant operations, maintenance, logistics and administration. Cement grinding units also generate indirect economic activity through transportation, contract services, construction, warehousing and local supply chains, the company said.

The proposed Godda cement plant is part of Ambuja’s strategy for eastern India, where the facility is intended to help serve demand in Jharkhand and neighbouring states. Locating production closer to these markets is expected to reduce transportation costs and delivery time, according to the company.

The expansion plan also includes a 2.9 MTPA grinding unit each in Assam and Bihar, along with additional clinker capacity in Assam. Together, these projects are intended to create a more distributed manufacturing network and improve the connection between clinker production and grinding capacity.

Vinod Bahety, CEO of Ambuja Cements’ cement business, said the company was building a more balanced manufacturing network by strengthening the linkage between clinker and grinding capacities and improving logistics efficiency.

In cement production, clinker is the intermediate material produced before it is ground and blended to make cement. The company’s stated plan therefore links the Godda proposal not only to additional output, but also to the movement of materials across its manufacturing and distribution network.

The announcement places Godda within a broader industrial and logistics framework rather than treating the proposed unit as an isolated facility. Its potential effects will depend on the implementation of the project and the development of the associated plant operations, transport networks and local supply chains.

Ambuja has not provided in the supplied announcement a commissioning timeline, project investment breakup for Godda, land details or a detailed employment estimate for the proposed unit. The company’s stated expansion target is to raise overall cement capacity from 113.5 MTPA to 155 MTPA by FY30, with the Godda project forming one part of that wider programme.
