Pune Dam Water Storage Falls to 80.65%, Below Last Year’s Level

Pune dam water storage stood at 23.51 thousand million cubic feet (TMC), or 80.65% of combined capacity, on November 2, according to the latest data for the four reservoirs supplying the city. The stock was lower than the 28.40 TMC, or 97.41%, recorded on the same date last year.

The four dams in the Pune water-supply system are Khadakwasla, Panshet, Warasgaon and Temghar. Together, they have an estimated storage capacity of 29.15 TMC. The latest reading places their combined stock 4.89 TMC below last year’s corresponding level.

Warasgaon held the largest quantity of water among the four reservoirs, with 10.98 TMC, equivalent to 85.63% of its capacity. Panshet had 8.27 TMC, or 77.67%, while Temghar held 3.14 TMC, or 84.63%. Khadakwasla recorded the lowest storage percentage at 56.82%, with 1.12 TMC.

Rainfall was recorded across all four catchments in the 24 hours ending at 6 am on November 2. Panshet received the highest rainfall at 13 millimetres, followed by Warasgaon at 11 mm, Khadakwasla at 8 mm and Temghar at 5 mm. Despite the rainfall, the data showed no inflow into the four dams at the time of reporting.

Water releases through the listed outlets were recorded as zero, except for releases identified for hydropower generation. The data also stated that Khadakwasla Dam had released a cumulative 19.05 TMC through its spillway so far.

The four reservoirs form a key part of Pune’s municipal water infrastructure, making their combined storage a closely watched indicator for the city’s supply position. The latest figures show that the system entered November with a lower reserve than it had on the corresponding date last year, although the reservoirs still held more than four-fifths of their combined estimated capacity.

The next changes in the city’s water position will depend on subsequent rainfall, inflows and releases recorded in the dam data. The latest figures were reported as of 6 am on November 2.
