EPFO WhatsApp Service Makes PF Checks Faster for Members

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has launched an EPFO WhatsApp service that allows members to check their provident fund balance, view their last five transactions and download their PF passbook through a chat-based interface.

The service was announced by the EPFO through an official post on X on November 1. The post said members could access the services by scanning a QR code or sending “Hi” to the WhatsApp number +91 8796441800.

The new facility adds a messaging-based access point to EPFO services, reducing the need for members to depend only on the organisation’s existing digital channels or visit an office for routine account information. The service is particularly relevant for workers who need quick access to contribution and transaction details while changing jobs, checking employer deposits or reviewing their retirement savings records.

According to the information shared by EPFO, members can use the service to check their current PF balance, view the latest five transactions and download their account passbook. The service also provides an option to change the language used in the chatbot.

To use the facility, members must first save the number 8796441800 and open a WhatsApp chat with it. They then need to send “Hi” and complete the verification process. The mobile number used for the chat must be linked to the member’s Universal Account Number, or UAN. After verification, users can select the relevant service from the options displayed by the chatbot.

Members can also access the service by scanning the QR code shared by EPFO. After opening the WhatsApp interface, users must send “Hi”, select their preferred language and choose from the available options. The menu includes PF balance, the last five transactions, passbook download and language change.

The service places routine provident fund information inside a platform widely used for everyday communication. For workers, the immediate utility is that basic account information can be accessed without navigating a separate website or waiting for an office-based response. However, access depends on the member’s mobile number being linked to the UAN and on completing the verification process successfully.

The launch also highlights the growing role of conversational digital services in the delivery of public-facing employment and social-security administration. In this case, the facility is limited to the services listed by EPFO: balance checks, recent transaction details, passbook downloads and language selection. The organisation’s announcement did not indicate that the WhatsApp service replaces other EPFO grievance, claim or account-correction channels.

EPFO has asked members to use the number shared in its official communication or the associated QR code to connect with the service. After verification, the chatbot displays the available account-information options and provides the selected details within the WhatsApp interface.
