Coal India Production Surges 19.3% in October to 67.2 MT

Coal India Ltd’s production rose 19.3 per cent year-on-year to 67.2 million tonnes (MT) in October, while offtake increased 18.7 per cent to 70.3 MT, according to provisional data filed by the state-owned miner with the stock exchanges.

The company had produced 56.4 MT of coal in October last year. Its October offtake stood at 59.2 MT a year earlier. The figures indicate a sharp month-on-month improvement in the company’s output and dispatch performance, although production growth for the financial year so far remains comparatively limited.

Between April and October of 2026-27, Coal India’s production rose 0.7 per cent to 388.2 MT from 385.5 MT in the corresponding period a year earlier. Offtake during the seven-month period grew 9.2 per cent to 454.6 MT, compared with 416.2 MT in the year-ago period.

Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) recorded the highest production among Coal India’s subsidiaries in October, producing 20.8 MT, a 25.3 per cent increase from a year earlier. South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) produced 14.3 MT, up 17.4 per cent.

Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) recorded the sharpest percentage growth in production. Its output rose 64.7 per cent to 5.9 MT. Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) produced 4.6 MT, an increase of 27.9 per cent, while Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) increased production by 26.1 per cent to 7.3 MT.

Bharat Coking Coal Ltd (BCCL) reported production of 2.9 MT, up 7.1 per cent. Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) was the only major subsidiary to record a decline in October production, with output falling 4.3 per cent to 11.4 MT.

The dispatch figures also varied significantly across subsidiaries. WCL’s offtake rose 50.2 per cent to 6.7 MT, while CCL recorded a 44.7 per cent increase to 8.0 MT. ECL’s offtake grew 35.1 per cent to 4.9 MT.

MCL dispatched 20.6 MT in October, up 13 per cent from a year earlier, and SECL’s offtake rose 19.5 per cent to 15.6 MT. NCL’s offtake declined 1.1 per cent to 11.2 MT.

The April-October figures show a different pattern across the subsidiaries. Production declined at NCL by 14.6 per cent, MCL by 4.2 per cent and BCCL by 9.8 per cent. In contrast, WCL, CCL and ECL recorded production growth of 15.9 per cent, 21.1 per cent and 12.3 per cent, respectively. The company’s filing did not provide further details on the reasons for the differing performances.
