Mandya Cardiac Hospital Plan Could Cut Critical Travel to Mysuru

Mandya could get a 100-bed cardiac hospital under a proposed sub-centre of Bengaluru-based Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, after Chief Minister DK Shivakumar directed officials to prepare a comprehensive project proposal for the facility.

The direction followed a request from Mandya MLA P Ravikumar Gowda Ganiga, who sought improved access to advanced heart care in the district. The proposed hospital is expected to provide specialised diagnostic and treatment services for cardiac patients and strengthen emergency healthcare facilities in Mandya and surrounding areas.

The plan is intended to address the distance patients currently travel for specialised treatment. According to the MLA, patients from Mandya and nearby rural areas have to travel nearly 50 km to Mysuru to access advanced care at Jayadeva Hospital. In cardiac emergencies, the time required to reach a specialised facility can become a critical factor, he said.

The proposal also links the need for the hospital to Mandya’s location along the busy Bengaluru-Mysuru National Highway. The route experiences frequent road accidents, according to the report, creating a need for well-equipped emergency medical services that can respond to both trauma cases and acute cardiac conditions.

A Jayadeva sub-centre in Mandya would bring specialised services closer to residents who currently depend on facilities in Mysuru and Bengaluru. The proposed 100-bed capacity would also provide a larger institutional base for diagnosis and treatment within the district, although the source report does not specify the location, land requirement, project cost, construction schedule or staffing plan.

The chief minister’s direction is currently an administrative step towards preparing the project proposal. It does not by itself establish a construction start date or confirm when the hospital will begin operations. The next stage will require officials to develop and submit the comprehensive proposal, after which details about the facility’s site, funding, design and implementation would need to be established.

For Mandya’s rural population, the proposal addresses a service-access gap created by the concentration of advanced cardiac care in larger urban centres. It also places emergency healthcare capacity within the wider transport corridor connecting Bengaluru and Mysuru, where the speed of access can affect treatment options for accident victims and patients experiencing medical emergencies.

Officials are expected to initiate the necessary steps and prepare the comprehensive project proposal for the proposed 100-bed Jayadeva hospital sub-centre in Mandya.
