A Hyderabad police constable posted at Meerpet Police Station has been arrested for allegedly misappropriating gold and money seized during a dowry harassment investigation, according to Meerpet Inspector Shobhan. The constable, identified as Shravan, was sent to remand after a case was registered on the 27th of this month.
Police allege that Shravan removed 12 tolas of gold that had been seized during the investigation and stored at the police station. He allegedly pawned the gold without attracting suspicion and obtained around Rs 12 lakh.
The investigation also found that the constable allegedly misused a mobile phone seized in the same case. According to police, he used financial details found on the device to transfer Rs 1.70 lakh to his own bank account and to the accounts of relatives.
The alleged transactions came to light after the victims noticed that money was missing from their account and approached the police. An internal inquiry was subsequently conducted, and police said it confirmed the alleged misappropriation of both the seized gold and money.
The case places attention on the handling of property and digital devices taken into custody during criminal investigations. Seized articles can include jewellery, phones, documents and financial information, making record-keeping, secure storage and access controls central to the integrity of police investigations. In this case, the alleged misuse involved both a physical asset kept at the station and financial information available through a seized phone.
Police said Shravan had worked in the department for six years. The arrest followed the internal inquiry and the registration of the case, after which he was sent to remand. The allegations remain subject to the investigation and legal process.
Meerpet Police are continuing to investigate the case, including the alleged transfers to the constable’s account and the accounts of his relatives, as well as the handling of the seized gold and mobile phone.
