Durgapur School Assault Triggers Police Hunt for Attacker

Police in Durgapur are trying to identify a man accused of severely assaulting an eighth-grade student outside a reputed English-medium school after a dispute between two students led to a parked scooter falling on the road. The student was taken to a local hospital for treatment, according to a report by Sangbad Pratidin – Bengal.

The incident took place outside the school premises after classes ended on Thursday. The report said the student had intervened in a quarrel between two students outside the school on Wednesday, and there had been no further trouble that day. He returned to school the following day and was allegedly attacked after coming out through the gate.

According to the report, a confrontation began between the student and another student on the road outside the school. During the altercation, the eighth-grade student fell on a scooter parked nearby, causing it to topple. An unidentified man then allegedly intervened and assaulted him.

The accused allegedly held the student by the throat, slapped him and beat him with a slipper. The man left the spot before other people could reach the scene, the report said. The injured student was rescued and taken to a local hospital, where he received treatment.

The student’s family has filed a written complaint at Durgapur police station. Police are examining who carried out the assault and whether the accused was a parent or guardian of one of the students involved in the earlier dispute. Investigators have collected CCTV footage from the school premises and are attempting to identify the alleged attacker.

The incident has also raised questions about student safety outside school gates and the role of security personnel in areas immediately beyond school boundaries. The available report does not establish whether school security staff witnessed the assault or whether the incident was captured on cameras covering the roadside area.

Laxman Gharui, BJP MLA from Durgapur West, expressed anger over the incident and said such conduct would not be tolerated. He said disputes inside a school should be handled within the institution and alleged that parents had come outside to assault a student. He also called on the school authorities to file a first information report.

School principal Kumar Singh said the institution was taking necessary action and cooperating with the police in every way. He added that the school would increase monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future. Police identification of the alleged attacker and the progress of the family’s complaint are the next formal developments in the case.
