NTPC Green Energy Adds 95.6 MW Solar Capacity in Rajasthan

NTPC Green Energy has started commercial operation of 95.6 MW from the Kalasar Solar Energy Project in Bikaner, Rajasthan, adding to the renewable-energy capacity of the NTPC group and advancing a larger solar component being developed under a round-the-clock power project.

The commercial operation took effect from 12:00 am on 30 October 2026, according to an exchange filing by NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL). The 95.6 MW capacity represents the fifth part of the Kalasar project’s solar component, which has a planned capacity of 650 MW.

The solar project is part of the 500 MW Round-the-Clock (RTC) project being implemented through NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL). The filing identified the project as the Kalasar Solar Energy Project and located it in Bikaner, a district that has emerged as a major site for large-scale solar development because of its high solar-resource potential and availability of land for utility-scale generation.

NGEL is the umbrella company for NTPC’s green-business initiatives. Its renewable-energy portfolio is being developed alongside the conventional generation assets of the state-owned NTPC group. The company’s latest commercial-operation declaration therefore adds to the group’s operating capacity rather than representing a standalone change in India’s total power-generation system.

Following the announcement, the total installed capacity of the NTPC group stood at 91,668 MW, while its commercial capacity reached 90,588 MW, the company said. The difference between installed and commercial capacity reflects the distinction between generation assets that form part of the group’s installed portfolio and capacity that has been declared commercially operational.

The project also illustrates the way large renewable-energy developments are being structured in phases. Instead of commissioning the entire solar component at once, the Kalasar project is being brought into commercial operation through separate capacity blocks. The latest declaration covers 95.6 MW and follows four earlier parts of the solar component, according to the filing.

NTPC said it is India’s largest power-generation company and supplies around one-fourth of the country’s power demand. The company operates under the Ministry of Power, while NGEL and NTPC REL handle the group’s renewable-energy expansion. The filing did not provide further details on the remaining commissioning schedule for the 650 MW solar component or the full implementation timeline for the RTC project.

The announcement comes as India’s power system adds more renewable generation while continuing to manage the operational requirements of a grid that must provide electricity beyond daylight hours. The RTC structure is intended to combine renewable generation with a supply profile designed to operate around the clock, although the filing did not specify the storage, balancing or other operational arrangements associated with the project.

For the immediate project milestone, the declared commercial operation of 95.6 MW increases NTPC group’s commercially operational capacity in Rajasthan’s renewable-energy network. Further capacity declarations from the remaining portions of the Kalasar solar component will determine how quickly the 650 MW solar component becomes fully operational.
